Chapter 6

Owen picked Harper up promptly at 2 p.m. as scheduled. The ride back to the inn was quiet. There was obviously still some tension between them, and he wasn’t feeling like making uncomfortable small talk. What could they possibly have in common, anyway? Her being from the city, him from the country? She had high maintenance written all over her. As pretty as she was, he knew good looks often came with high standards, and that outweighed any positives she had going for her.

Still, he couldn’t deny there was a magnetic attraction that seemed to be developing for her, which was silly. She had a fiancé, and even if she didn’t, she wasn’t his type. He’d best steer clear of her until she left town on Monday.

“Did you have a nice time shopping, dear?” Mrs. Sanders asked once he and Harper made their way inside.

“I did. This is a great town where you all live. You’re very blessed.”

“I’m so glad you enjoyed yourself. Come get a snack. Banana nut muffins just came out of the oven, and I’ll fix you a cup of tea to warm you up.” His mother loved having someone to feed, and Owen was used to it, but why did she need to spoil this woman? Harper wasn’t a paying guest, after all. He had a mental tally running of each bit of food his mother offered her.

“I’m actually a bit tired. I might go up to my room for a nap, if you don’t mind.” Harper said.

“Of course, dear. But here, take something to eat up to your room with you.” Mrs. Sanders went to work, making Harper a tray of warm muffins, butter and jam to take upstairs. Owen brushed past Harper and moved toward the fridge, mindlessly scanning its contents. As he did, he caught a whiff of her sweet scent. Why did this woman have to smell so good?

Harper accepted the food from Mrs. Sanders and headed toward her room. Once Owen was sure she was out of earshot, he took the opportunity to have a talk with his mother.

“Don’t you think you’re being a bit generous with her, Mom?” he asked, pointedly.

“I’m treating her the way I’d treat any other guest,” she responded, running a kettle of water in the sink. “I understand you don’t care for her being here, but we have to make a good impression for the article.”

The mere mention of the article twisted at Owen. Why did she have to remind him?

The sound of the front door knocker echoed through the downstairs, and Owen made his way to the foyer to find that the photographers had arrived. Perfect. The sooner they could get this photo shoot done, the sooner Harper would have what she needed for the article and could leave.

More importantly, the sooner he’d be able to extinguish the flames developing inside of him.
